The picturesque medieval town of Sancerre sits prominently above this world renowned wine region steeped in history, tradition and, of course, Sauvignon Blanc. Located by the Loire River in France, this area is seen by many as one of the best locations for growing Sauvignon Blanc with the wines truly expressing a sense of place. One of their hallmark characteristics is a distinctive mineral element, which is brought about due to the grapes being grown on the pure limestone, clay-limestone or flinty soils (silex) this region is particularly know for. These wines typically feature aromas and flavors of citrus (lime, Meyer lemon), pear, quince, melon or stone fruit (white peach, apricot) with notes of orange blossoms and often an herbaceous undertone. It is also one of the rare occasions where a Sauvignon Blanc can stand up to a few years aging, but they are such pleasure to drink right away it’s hard to have the restraint. A beautiful wine for fresh goat cheese, white wine steamed mussels, clam linguine or smoked trout with a corn-avocado salad. It is also one of the best pairings for the notoriously difficult vegetable, asparagus. A fantastic accompaniment to cut through the richness of grilled salmon or roast pork. |
