January brings a push towards hearty simpler meals and that warm the heart as well as the body. It is the perfect opportunity to try this fantastic Sardinian red that is now on sale! Cannonau (the local name for Garnacha/Grenache) was thought to have arrived on the island of Sardinia with the Spanish in the late 13th century. However, some researchers are beginning to explore the prospect that Cannonau may actually be the original Grenache clone that was spread to the rest of the world. Cannonau di Sardegna is a region-wide DOC appellation covering the entirety of Sardinia and 20 percent of Sardinian wine is classified as Cannonau di Sardegna, making it the island’s most important red wine on the marketplace. To be receive this classification, the wine must be comprised of 85% Cannonau with the addition of only “two other non-aromatic black grape varieties suitable for cultivation in Sardinia.” Pala I Fiori provides supple red fruit aromas of juicy ripe wild strawberry, red plum and cherry with an undertone of baking spice and red licorice. Clean, polished on the palate with a bright capacity that is fruit driven but elegant with good structural tannins leading to a firm finish. This well made example is perfect with baked ziti or lasagna, eggplant or chicken parmesan or any dish that uses a red sauce as the noted brightness of the wine will be a great counter point for the acidity in tomato sauces. Also, Cannonau de Sardegna tends to be high in anthocyanins and polyphenols, antioxidant-rich compounds which have been linked to heart health. Raise a glass to the meal and also to your health! |
