Delight in exploring Northern Italy’s iconic Lake Garda from the comfort of your home. Lugana is a picturesque, white wine-specific viticultural region situated along the southern banks of Lake Garda close to Verona. Here a very unique native grape is grown, Turbiana. For the longest time, it was thought to be a variant of Trebbiano (the Cognac grape) as it was called Trebbiano di Lugana. But local producers and wine experts believed it impossible that the variety behind Lugana, a wine with depth and structure that needs at least a year or two in bottle to fully develop, was really Trebbiano, a grape that typically produces simple wines. DNA testing proved them correct the grape’s genome boasts characteristics inconsistent with other Trebbianos and in 2021 Turbiana was entered into Italy’s national register of vine varieties. This grape thrives in this region's calcareous clay soils, rich in mineral salts that help the fruit reach high levels of ripeness and complexity. All Lugana wines must comprise at least 90% of this variety, and are often praised for their balance, structure and fragrance (similar in that of Soave Classico). They are also characterized by their freshness gained from the soil characteristics, fruit concentration, underlying floral and spice notes, and delicate acidity. Lugana DOC wines have flavors of juicy citrus, white stone fruit and almond due to most producers vinifying in stainless steel with prolonged skin contact on the lees. High quality examples, such as the Buglioni Musa, have notes of pineapple, mandarin orange with a round and lush style supported by the classic Italian ‘green almond’ flavor. The bitter almond note morphs into hazelnut-like flavors as the wine ages which it can do nicely for two to three years. Named ‘Musa’ or ‘Muse’ in English, this wine is a source of vinicultural inspiration for the Buglioni family who dreamed of producing a world-class white wine from a historical region in their Veneto homeland. Straw yellow color with a greenish shimmer. Intense aroma, rich with notes of flowers and fruity with hints of citrus. Good structure and acidity with mineral undertones. |
