“If it came from a more prestigious appellation in the southern Rhone, it would go for three times the price.” Jeff Carrel is the Languedoc's self-proclaimed "eclectic winemaker," who owns neither a winery nor any vineyards, but crafts some of the best, and most interesting wines in Southern France. We love this wine because you are getting a top winemaker using estate vineyards, crafting authentic reds at the fraction of the price. His Les Darons is a blend of 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan sourced from sustainably grown 30+ year old Grenache and Carignan vines and 20-year-old Syrah vines. Grenache and Carignan have long been cultivated in Southern France and represent the “forefathers” of the Languedoc Appellation’s red wines. An homage showcasing these varietals, this wine was subsequently labeled “Les Darons”, a slang term for father or papa, and the name seems fitting for this patriarchal wine. Eclectic or not, Carrel makes fabulous wine, and the Les Darons is a smooth, robust, pure expression of the Languedoc. It is incredibly accessible with loads of character, packed with ripe, red, and dark fruits, with plenty of spice, garrigue, and a streak of underlying minerality. |
