The 2013 Hail Mary, a Syrah/Grenache blend, is one of the more distinctive wines in the Limerick Lane range. Specifically, while all of the Limerick wines boast considerable power, the Hail Mary also has an extra touch of finesse that serves to balance some of the more extroverted elements in the glass. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and menthol are some of the nuances that meld into the effortless, richly textured finish. Originally conceived as a last minute attempt to salvage some of the crop when the winery was out of tank space, Hail Mary is a co-fermentation of Syrah and Grenache done with whole clusters. Sometimes desperation turns out to be divine inspiration, as is very much the case here.
The blend of 94% Syrah and 16% Grenache (100% whole-clusters and carbonic fermentation) is the 2013 Proprietary Red Hail Mary. This is a sexy beast of a wine, with dense ruby/purple color and terrific strawberry, black cherry and meaty, earthy fruit on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, but silky smooth, this is hedonism at its best. The alcohol is a relatively restrained 14.5%, and only 169 cases were produced, so it’s limited in availability. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.
