Clear bright lemon yellow. The bouquet is a little more complex than the Charmes. While there is a certain oakiness up front, this really kicks on across the second half of the palate and there is a suggestion of a future development of the lees all supported by a refreshing, tingling mineral note. Excellent persistence.
A notable success, the 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières (Domaine Louis Jadot) unfurls in the glass with notes of white currant, mint, spring flowers, citrus zest, drawn butter and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with fine concentration, racy acids and chalky structuring extract, it's one of the high points of the range. The 2020 vintage has turned out beautifully at this address, delivering concentrated, flavorful wines with alcohol levels between 13.3% and 13.7% and with low pHs. Winemaker Frédéric Barnier told me that efforts were made to pick earlier in the day, and that fruit waiting to be processed was kept fresh in a special cold room. In the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. But aside from the quality of the 2020s and these technical developments, described in more detail in the accompanying tasting notes, there's other noteworthy news too: in 2021, Jadot entered into organic conversion for their domaine vineyards.
The 2020 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a step up in terms of precision and mineralité compared with the Meursault-Charmes. The palate is vibrant and well-balanced, quite tensile, touches of bitter lemon mixed with ginger and hazelnut, leading to a long and harmonious finish. This is recommended.
A naturally exotic nose features cool and ultra-pure aromas of jasmine tea, carnation, rose petal and fresh essence of pear. The finer if slightly less concentrated middle weight flavors exude an appealing bead of minerality on the beautifully persistent and well-balanced finale. This very dry but not really austere effort should also amply repay extended cellaring. *Burghound Outstanding!*
